Many modern designers and decorators use travertine to create unique masterpieces – for many, something new and unknown. After all, it was from this material that the Roman Colosseum, one of the most important sights of Italy, was built.
Travertine is commonly called calcareous tuff, that is, a polycrystalline fine-grained rock. It is a transitional rock from limestone to marble. The transformation of the material occurs under high pressure formed in the earth’s depths, but this may take millennia. Thus, from limestone, after 4000 years, travertine is obtained, and from it, respectively, after the next 4000 years – marble. Being a direct relative of limestone and marble, travertine is rich in calcium.
The stone is not afraid of precipitation and significant temperature fluctuations, which is why travertine is so often used for facade work. The facade acquires an exceptional appearance while meeting all requirements of strength and endurance.
Travertine is excellently workable; it is easily cut, polished, and sawn. This allows giving it any shape and only expands its area of use.

Stone with a naturally porous surface is most often used not in solid but in cut form, for example, as facing tile. Fireplaces clad with travertine look spectacular: the light weight of the stone does not burden the structure, while it withstands prolonged heating well and looks great. Today the range of travertine use is so wide that it sometimes seems that almost any product can be made from this porous stone:
- finishing door and window openings;
- floor and wall tiles;
- tiles for facade cladding;
- countertops and bar tops;
- stairs;
- interior items.
